I ordered this watch from Amazon, but apparently Amazon just refers the sale to Watch Colony. I know this because when Watch Colony sent me the wrong watch and I contacted Amazon about the error, they told me to refer the problem to them. I did so. WC told me to return the watch and they would refund the price. They did not provide a shipping label to return it; instead telling me I should just let them know how much shipping was and they would send me a money order for that amount. I returned the watch and the price of the watch was refunded a month ago. Follow up inquires to WC about shipping charges have been ignored. So I spent $5.14 of my own money correcting their mistake and an hour or so of my time re-packing the watch and taking it to the UPS store for nothing. I cannot rate this watch, since I never received it. My recommendation is not to do business with Watch Colony.

The day after I posted the review above I finally received a refund of shipping charges from Watch Colony. (In fact, they sent $6, so I give them some credit for that.)

I spent more time than I care to admit looking at many different types of sports watches. My main objective was to get a watch that was tough, easy to read, had a stop watch + count down timer, was solar powered, had a stainless band and was good looking. The auto synchronization was a bonus and it works exactly as described. It synchs every night no problem and keeps precise time. I like the way it looks BUT more importantly it had to be durable and tough. I had a G-Shock before and it was very hard to kill. The one thing I wasn't crazy about was the band. It had the plastic strap and velcro fastener which worked good at first but over time, not so good. When I bought this watch, in February it was $79.99 and I would buy it again even with the increase in price. The solar works great (NO battery to hassle with replacing) and a couple hours in the sun keeps it fully charged for weeks. If you want to spend more go ahead, but this watch is a great buy for the money!

It is hard to believe that Casio could get all the technology that this watch has in it for under $100. Never worry about setting time, never worry about batteries, and it has a stopwatch, and world time. I previously spent hundreds of dollars on watches that seemed to require some degree of care and attention, and then died. Granted, I've only had this watch for about a month but if it last two or three years I'll be so much further ahead than with my previous watches. My guess, based on my son wearing Casio for years (and he is harder on watches than me), is that this watch will last a very long time. I have no complaints.

I own many watches, and some from those Famous swiss folks that cost alot and also cost about $400-500 to oil, which gets old. They are either fast or slow, and at that magic moment as they slow down after oiling they actually tell the right time for a passing moment. Then you need a watch winder, you can't read them in the dark, and they are basically a throw back to the past. I have enjoyed them but now its time to have much more spending much less. This watch is fantastic after 3 months of ownership, confortable, and after the initial setup, its easy to use. Hello to Casio-- "for watches imported into North America, have them set up for Spanish and English. Who needs the option to seek out the Japan radio frequency, or have the days shown in Japanese? And the instructions to get out of the Japan mode are weak at best, rewrite them." -- Go on line to get to the instructions and save your eyesight-- but this only needs to be done once, and then you have a very easy to read and use watch. If you ever need to change out the rechargeable battery, it can be done and it costs about $8. I have had a solar citizen watch, with the same panasonic battery for nine years, and it shows no signs of failure, and is also a great watch, but this one lighter, easier to read, has more features and is radio controlled.

this watch beats all the other luxury watches I have. I own Tag, Cartier, Technomarine, Swiss Army...etc. but this light, solar powered watch is much more accurate and functional, and has become my favorite. I primarily use it when I play golf. Unlike other heavy luxury watches, this one is so comfortable that it does not interfere with your swing. you need a watch when you play golf, but most people do not wear one probably because their watches are not comfortable. after owing this one, I now doubt why I had to pay $$$ for those inaccurate watches because the single most important function of a watch is to show the TIME!!! this watch is clearly a winner and frankly I was surpirsed by its near perfection. only difficulty was that I had to struggle figuring out how to use them. but you gotta read the manual spend some time with it. and in a few days, you will love this watch.

I purchased this watch because I really hate having to constantly adjust the time and dates on my various time pieces. After reading the user manual however, I found myself wondering if I had made the right choice. It took me several tries before I was able to get the correct time displayed on my watch. The print in the manual is so small, I had to use a magnifying glass to read it. Other than that, the watch did reset itself when I was on vacation and seems to be doing just fine now. Great watch, over complicated manual with very confusing instructions. I give Casio 4 out of 5 for their quality !

It is a tank. Mega durable. I put this thing through hell and the face doesnt even get a scratch ... good material and recessed. I never ever have to set the time because it's synched (living next to Fort Collins doesnt hurt). AutoEL feature is brilliant. If it doesnt detect movement for a long time, the display shuts off - genius! Of course, tough solar means I dont have to ever worry about battery. Being a frequent flyer, the dual time zone with preset cities is also a huge plus for me. Extremely easy to use with intuitive controls



This watch is also made in Japan (rather Thailand), if you care about that



3+ years of ownership now and its been solid for me. Oh, and the reason I bought this? I had 3 Timex Ironmans fail on me with 2 months of ownership (though, it was cosmetic and not functional - their straps broke)

I bought one of these several months ago. It's one tough piece of machinery. Time and other data on its face are easily read. Operation is relatively simple and straight forward although the accompanying manual is confusing in places. Picking up the time signals from Ft Collins has been a snap. I've never bothered removing the watch at night, placing it near a window, or any of the other things the manual recommends to facilitate signal reception; and have never missed an update. Casio could have done a few things to improve this model. The three circles on its face designating battery status, five minute increments, alarm, etc are barely readable. The five minute increment circle, the most readable of the three, is about as useful as an extra nostril. Everybody would be better off if it had been left out of the design and the other two circles made larger and more readable. One other thing would make the watch more efficient. As it is, it looks for the Ft Collins signal at 1:00 am, 2:00 am, 3:00 am, 4:00 am, and 5:00 am. Later models, like the 3431 movement, stops looking for the signal once one is received. Much more efficient. All this is pretty nit picky though. Bottom line is this watch is tough as nails, is incredibly accurate, and is about as reliable as gravity. If you want a watch that works flawlessly, that cares not one whit how badly you punish it, and that will not cost you an arm and a leg--this watch is as good as you are likely to find.

I got this as a gift from my wife, who paid over $100 for it about six years ago. Like others here I had very good experience with this watch. I had to be careful where I left it in the house, or it would not get a time lock. That wasn't a problem, because the time could not drift much in a day or two. It was a little annoying that it tried to reset the time at 5AM, because I was awake and wearing the watch at that time of day, and the display would blank as it tried to get a signal lock. Touching any of the buttons would bring it back to life. I'm sure it would be even more annoying for anyone who works graveyard shift.



I did not have any problems with the battery life. For the people who complain about the battery dying, completely discharging any battery causes damage to it. No rechargable will last long if it is frequently discharged (even car batteries). If you keep it in the top 1/3 of its charging range, the battery will last practically forever.



I loved this watch, and wore it all the time. But I haven't been able to wear it in a couple of months, because the band broke. Casio seems to be the sole supply of bands that will work with this watch, because it's an unusual shape, but they seem to be treating this as a disposable watch. The watch itself will probably last for another fifteen years, but without a band, it's garbage today. I would gladly rate it 5 stars, but the fact that it is a disposable watch gets it knocked down considerably. With Casio's attitude that $100+ watches are disposable, I don't know if I'll want to buy another one of theirs.



EDIT: Before I wrote this, I had ordered a replacement band from casiosalesandservice.com which does not appear to be directly affiliated with Casio. They listed the OEM band as "out of stock" but said they would collect orders for a future order, so I placed an order. A month went by, and I decided it was futile. Within THREE DAYS of posting this review, I get an Email saying the band has shipped. Interesting timing? In any case, they have the band in stock, now, and I'm VERY HAPPY to have my favorite watch back.

Had the watch for several years, it performs well. However, Casio customer support is a complete FAIL. Had to return the watch for service recently; shortly after having received it back from service (and paying $45) the buttons started falling off. I returned it just over a month from the original service date and was told it would be ANOTHER $45 to fix the buttons. Contacting customer support was a COMPLETE waste of time, so don't bother. According the watch and company gets ZERO stars

I have had the watch for a month now and am happy as can be with it. I live in Portland, OR and find it synchs itself nightly by just placing it in a window. I set it outside on my porch for a couple of hours the day I got it, watched it move from the middle charge to the high, and it hasn't moved off it it. This is despite the fact that I work a swing shift and usually get home around 3AM causing most of my wearing of the watch to be at night.



Learning to use the watch did take some time to sit and actually read the manual (downloaded and read as a pdf rather than the little booklet) and then practice the functions on the watch, but this is not a criticism just a statement.



The only aspects I'm not in love with are: 1. the resin band - I've never really liked them 2. the large inset that tracks the minutes in the hour - This really is redundant, and it seems like this could be removed and the space used to better size/place the other two functional insets.

This watch does exactly what it says it will do. I live in New England and have had no problem receiving the time signal whenever I choose to simply by putting the watch in front of a window as per the instructions. The battery reached full charge the first time I spent time outdoors in the sun and has remained there ever since. Will it hold its charge over the winter? Time will tell but so far I am more than pleased with the piece.

I would have given it 5 stars but the atomic auto time setting is not working in my current location which is in Portland, Maine. It was working when I left Florida until I hit Maine and now it will not recieve signal, other than that it is a very good watch.

I have used Casio watches ever since they started selling their Databank watches. Their rugged design and reliable electronics have made them a favorite of mine for everyday use. When my last Databank watch lost the lettering on most of its buttons (after over 5 years of constant use), I decided it was time for a new Casio watch.



Since I own a PDA cellphone now, I decided I no longer needed another Databank watch. Instead, I decided to try a G-Shock with atomic clock accuracy - and the solar part was a bonus feature. I love it!! However, if you are new to Casio watches, trying to understand the displays and the button sequences can be a challenge, at first. The solar cells on the watch face limit the font size on the displays, too.



I really like all of the features of this watch, and I would give it five stars - but I noticed Casio really hasn't improved their watchband design after all of these years. Their watchbands are comfortable, but they wear out about a year later (less if you live in cold climates). Afterwards, you either have to buy a replacement Casio band -or- another brand watchband (which lasts longer, but clashes with the looks of the watch).

I live right outside of Washington DC.



The Atomic Sync happens every night with the watch sitting on my night stand - I don't have to place it by the window. The Auto EL works perfectly and has 2 settings 1.5 and 2.5 seconds - this was something I did not know but makes the watch even better. The solar charging seems to work and Hopefully this watch will last years and years without having to replace the capacitor that is charged by the solar cells. I had a spare 22mm nylon Nato strap so I cut notches into it and was able to get it under the 16mm lugs for this watch without having to get the casio strap extendors which would have made the watch more bulky. It wasn't the cleanest of jobs but I did burn the frays away and you can't see anything when the watch is on my writs. The final product is an awesome watch with an awesome, comfortable strap. It look very tough and I get a lot of complements on it. In a word I love my watch. It does everything perfectly and well worth the extra $35 over the DW5600E.

 "Not as Versatile as Older Models" 2009-08-31

I have used G-Shocks for 25 years. This model does not allow me to set the countdown clock on anything other than an even minute. Moreover, the countdown only allows up to a one hour countdown. I used to be able to set hours, minutes, and seconds on countdown. This to me makes the countdown timer fairly useless or at least not versatile enough to be be often useful.



Another feature that used to be there, but is missing on this model is being able to see the actual time while the stopwatch is running. It used to display the time in the upper right hand of the display while the stopwatch was ticking off. This no longer happens. Moreover, the stopwatch no longer has a "split time" function, allowing me to stop the display while still having the stopwatch counting in the background.



Overall this watch is at best a compromise. You get the "atomic" feature which means that it periodically synchronises with a cesium clock somewhere, but you lose features of the countdown timer and the stopwatch. Three stars at best.

I own a dozen or so watches, including several Seiko divers, Casio and a Rolex. I typically find myself wearing this G-shock alternately with the Rolex Sea-Dweller. It's a great watch for knocking around on weekends, or to take to the beach or pool. Solar and Atomic means I don't have to worry about batteries or setting the watch. 5 stars, I highly recommend this watch.

For anyone who read these same reviews and frets, don't. The only thing you have to do to see the day is press the adjust key, and to see the date again, press it once more. That's all... if that's too much work for you, then the last thing you should worry about is a watch. Also, if you need to be reminded more than one time in a day which actual day it is, again, you have more problems then simply telling time will solve.



This watch is perfect for the minimalist... someone who is looking for something cheap, durable, unostentatious, and above all, functional, then this is the watch for you. It is under 100$, has a solar cell battery, and receives it's time from radio transmissions (aka, atomic). The band is very comfortable, the light does not remain on for 5-10 seconds (it simply flashes you the time, then fades), and there are even power saving functions and special auto-lighting modes available. 5 alarms (4 single and 1 recurring "snooze" alarm), a stopwatch, and a 60-min max countdown timer round out the basic features. No compass, altimeter, or any of that fancy crap that will only be used in special circumstances.



This watch is perfect for the everyday task, whether it be at home or on duty, it will take a beating and keep on ticking, so to speak. It really looks very nice, and I have no idea how Casio can get away with selling these at such a great price.

I really wish I saw the GWM5600-1 model before ordering this one on Amazon. It just irks me all the time that this watch doesn't display the date and day of the week simultaneously (just has a useless empty spot where the day's abbreviation should be). I wouldn't recommend this watch to a friend because I am eventually going to replace it with the GWM5600-1 or equivalent.
